    Introduction to Adaptor Couplings

Fernco Adaptor Couplings, sometimes referred to as reducer couplings, are designed to connect unadopted (private) drainage pipes with different outside diameters – connecting larger drainage pipes to smaller drainage pipes and vice versa.

Adaptor Couplings are made from three component parts: one stepped moulded EPDM rubber body with two different diameters on each side and two 316 grade stainless steel clamp bands, which when tightened create a secure connection.

These simple yet effective connectors can be tightened onto pipes using a nut driver and torque wrench, creating a permanent airtight and watertight seal in just seconds.

    Unadopted Drainage Applications

Fernco Adaptor Couplings are the tried and tested method for connecting unadopted or private drainage systems and with a range developed over 30 years, Fernco has an Adaptor Coupling for almost any pipe configuration.

Applications include housing sites, private roads, industrial sites, agriculture land and more.

    Adopted Drainage Applications

Adopted drainage systems are most commonly adopted by highway agencies, water companies or local authorities.

Connections using flexible couplings are likely regulated under a specification such at WIS 4-41-01, which states that all adopted drainage systems must only be connected using Shear Banded Couplings. This is to ensure joint stability and sewer invert level is maintained.

For this reason, Adaptor Couplings are prohibited on adopted drainage systems. Drainage pipes with differences in outside diameters should be connected using Shear Banded Couplings combined with Bushes.

    Adaptor Solutions for UltraRib Pipe

Connecting onto ribbed pipe can be tricky if using the wrong type of coupling. Clamp bands on Adaptor Couplings cover only one rib and pipe movement/ground settlement can sometimes cause this to fall between the ribs.

Fernco manufacture couplings specifically for UltraRib pipe. The Flexseal AR Adaptor Couplings feature an extra wide clamp band on the side connecting the UltraRib pipe. The clamp band is wide enough to cover at least two ribs to ensure a secure fit with added sealing protection. The other side of the AR Adaptor Coupling is designed to connect Clay pipe of the same DN as the connecting UltraRib.

    WaterMark Certified

“The WaterMark Certification Scheme is a mandatory certification scheme for plumbing and drainage products to ensure they are fit for purpose and appropriately authorised for use in plumbing and drainage installations.” – Australian Building Codes Board

Fernco offers a full range of products which are certified under the WaterMark Certification scheme including Adaptor Couplings.
